Allison's actions

Simplicity

Less Screen Time

I will replace 30 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Energy

Power Down the Computer

I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Go for a Daily Walk

I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset

I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Support Local Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health

More Fruits and Veggies

I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.

I thought it went well! I'm usually quite busy and have little to no time during my day to go out of my way to do anything ecologically sound. However, it was nice being able to choose from a variety of activities that can easily be done throughout the day that affect my footprint on the Earth. Little things really do go a long way!

I went to a Halloween party that was themed "Murder Mystery," and spent a few hours roleplaying a character instead of staring at my phone and hanging out with friends. I was the murderer!

I meal prepped for the next day and a half by cutting up all vegetables in the house that I was dog sitting in, and I roasted a variety of peppers and onions.

    Nature Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
Father Thomas Berry says, "...our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." Respond to Berry's assertion.

Each morning, my mother goes outside before the sun rises and does a prayer with her corn pollen. I do it every so often, but whenever I participate in my morning prayer, I feel like I'm balanced in all aspects of my being. There's a specific Navajo term for this called hozho, and it represents harmony and your overall wellbeing, and partaking in the sunrise is crucial into achieving this balance. I agree with Berry!

    Simplicity Less Screen Time
What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

Instead of spending another 30 minutes in front of a screen, I spent the extra time studying and reading for my classes. It actually helped me stay on top of my readings this past week and for that I am eternally grateful.

I walked the dogs I had been sitting for the past week and enjoyed a lovely evening walk before leaving. It was a relatively peaceful walk until they barked at some other dogs and caused a scene.

How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

It's easier to see how your community thrives, I think. And by that I mean: how is my community recycling? Is my community nurturing the Earth? What kind of people reside in my neighborhood? Etc. The vast majority of people in my neighborhood are old retired people or families with small children. I see how the older people interact with their yards, and steps they take to provide for the community. As for the younger families, I see what activities they take part in the community, like sports or academic functions. There's a more intimate connection while walking by the houses than driving by.

I haven't been home as often due to my constant traveling and dog sitting gigs. I was home for the first time in maybe a month and a half? I found that there were still a large amount of vegetables in my family's fridge that were going to waste, so I tried to use as many veggies to make a stir fry before the veggies rotted. I used half a drawer! However, I also threw out a lot of food that hadn't been cooked or utilized while I had been away, unfortunately.

What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How can we start shifting from a meat-focused food culture to a more plant-based one?

I think North America, the United States specifically, is prone to capitalistic tendencies and a free market mindset. Our country is largely ran and funded by corporate companies, and they don't see our food as a resource or human need anymore. These companies see our food as a commodity, and they will do whatever it takes--within rules of law--in order to make money off of consumers. It's no longer a feed/eat society, it's a producer/consumer society. Meat is sold in bulk, and in order to provide that bulk to the consumer, companies raise cattle by the masses! I also think that the US is largely uneducated as to a balanced nutritional diet and where we can find natural proteins outside of meat. I myself am a vegetarian, and I attain the majority of my protein from eggs, nuts, and a variety of veggies. There's this common misconception that meat is REQUIRED to attain your daily servings of protein, but the vast majority of meat sold in supermarkets are littered in fat (as well as other icky things). If we educated communities to eat more plant based in order to better support local products, and reduce carbon emissions, then I think a plant-based diet will start taking off!

What are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?

During one of our general council meetings at work, my coworker brought up her attendance at the sustainability leadership council and what PCC could do to better conserve energy on campus. We had a large discussion on technology in all of our buildings and how much money and energy would be saved if we turned off all electronics when they're not in use, especially in classrooms! I know that in some classrooms, computers automatically restart and stay on for the rest of the night. Why not have the computers automatically shut down at the end of the night when they're not manually turned off? The same with projectors, TV screens, etc.?
