Nick Rosenthal 10/03/2018 4:54 PMDay 1 is off to a great start. I love having a challenge like this to keep me focused and aware of my choices. I feel like I do a good job overall but this helps me go from good to great! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Nick Rosenthal 10/03/2018 4:53 PMThe amount of food packaging waste is a huge concern. I bought spinach at Costco the other day and inside of the huge plastic container was a plastic bag the housed the spinach. I am buying Organic Spinach as a healthy choice yet have a plastic on plastic container holding the product. I went to my local grocer of choice and asked them to carry reusable produce bags for have them available to purchase so people are aware that they don't have to use the plastic bags to put their produce into. It almost defeats the purpose of using a reusable grocery bag when all of your produce is in a plastic bag! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Nick Rosenthal 10/03/2018 4:50 PMSpot on! I am a huge believer in making the right choices when it comes to our diets and it all starts with REAL, WHOLE FOODS (not the market but the foods themselves) I try to make most of my food from scratch and find it much easier to do when I put a meal plan together so I know what to shop for and have a plan to make the meals. My two favorites are sweet potatoes and avocados. I can make three meals a day with using those two ingredients as my 'base'. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Nick Rosenthal 10/03/2018 4:48 PMThe biggest barrier for me is just remembering the reusable bottle that I have. Often times I catch myself remembering the bottle but forgetting to bring it into the place I am eating to avoid using not just water bottles but also plastic cups. I have been better about making sure to have an extra one on hand and also just putting the practice of using by reusable bottle in action. The more I do it, the more it becomes a part of my routine. Put differently, I need to just train myself to become better at it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Nick Rosenthal 10/03/2018 4:45 PMI don't eat much fish or seafood. Most of what I buy is canned products that are either labeled with labels like "wild caught". I often try to incorporate more seafood in my diet to reduce the amount of "meat" that I consume but often just substitute veggies instead due to the cheaper price. I will start looking more at the sale items at the local grocery store that normally offers better choices than the larger chain grocers in the region.
