Amy's actions
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 20 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Amy Salsbery 10/24/2018 8:56 AMBuying locally means less fuel is being used to transport my food. I will try to stop at fruit stands and farmer's markets more often than I do now. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Amy Salsbery 10/24/2018 8:55 AMWow! I hope this isn't me! I would rather use that money to save more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Amy Salsbery 10/24/2018 8:55 AMI use vegetable bags at the grocery store. I try to put more than one veggie per bag but I think there are reusable ones I could bring. Or I can start reusing my plastic ones instead of getting new ones every time I go to the store. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my HomeTo what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Amy Salsbery 10/24/2018 8:54 AMI do believe that toxic chemicals are not good for me. I started noticing getting headaches when I would use them to clean my house. Now I notice even sometimes burning candles gives me headaches so I know these fumes have bad stuff in them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Amy Salsbery 10/24/2018 8:53 AMThere are times I forget to bring a reusable water bottle. I have to set myself up for success by always having one with me. -
