Matthew's actions
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those who produce my food in other regions of the world to make better choices when I shop.
Waste
Carry my Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Matthew Sanchez 10/09/2018 1:34 PMThe next step to take is to make sure to install low flow toilets. As well as make sure to turn the water off when I'm washing my hands. Only using the water to rinse once I'm done. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Meet My Local FarmersWhen you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? Do you think this might enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?
Matthew Sanchez 10/09/2018 1:33 PMSome of the advantages of knowing where my food comes from and purchasing it from them is to help my community build and become stronger. If you know the people who work the fields that give you your food, you'll become more inclined to make sure that they are treated with dignity and respect. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Matthew Sanchez 10/09/2018 1:27 PMBeing able to sign up for paperless billing and stop the flow of junk mail to my home has been a godsend. I find my recycle bin does not fill as much as it used to. Next step is to try and go digital for all things in my life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Matthew Sanchez 10/09/2018 1:17 PMI regularly use straws and coffee cups. Bringing my own mug to work and purchasing a reusable straw will reduce the single use items that I put into the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Carry my TrashWhat one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?
Matthew Sanchez 10/09/2018 1:13 PMEat out less. When I bring my food, I can make sure to use reusable containers.
