REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?
Rodney Sedillo 10/24/2018 3:11 PMWe are new! There was a big surprise to see how much less our trash weighed and how full our inside bin got. Our compost goes to creating topsoil which will be used in our yard for plants and for a garden this coming spring. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go get a check upHow do you practice self care?
Rodney Sedillo 10/24/2018 3:08 PMRegular checkups are key. I have recently used activity challenges to increase my daily activities and use mobile apps to track progress and keep up with recommended goals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my HomeTo what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Rodney Sedillo 10/24/2018 3:05 PMTo a great extent. While we child proofed our home before our kid arrived, we used this challenge to find more natural, sustainable and non toxic products to replace them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Rodney Sedillo 10/24/2018 3:03 PMWhole foods! And not the grocery chain. We have tried to shop the outside of the store and stay away from all the processed foods on the interior of the store. Greater processing, greater energy use, and reduction in nutrients in these products. We try to not buy things in boxes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Rodney Sedillo 10/24/2018 3:00 PMA recent publication from the USDA showed the majority of the us land use is for meat production or farm land to feed those animals. It says to me the meat lobbies do a great job making consumers feel we need to eat meat and a lot more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Rodney Sedillo 10/24/2018 2:55 PMThis was not an easy challenge. We did compost and feed remaining food scraps we didn't eat to our chickens. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Upgrade My WindowsHow does improving your home's energy efficiency help you better live out your values?
Rodney Sedillo 10/24/2018 2:53 PMReplacing our single pane windows meant we lost less energy, reflected more from entering the home and reduced the amount of exterior noise. Doing these upgrades to an older home means we extend the life of the structure. No need for a brand new home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Upgrade Heating & Cooling UnitsWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Rodney Sedillo 10/24/2018 2:50 PMA 20 year old ac unit in our house was very inefficient and drawing way more power than it was rated for. It was also not sized properly. While a big investment, we are using less energy and it is cooling the house better, removing more moisture. The higher temperatures in the summer are now more comfortable than before. -
Rodney Sedillo 10/24/2018 12:55 PMFirst time participating and looking forward to next year. Our household is a bit more eco friendly now. The challenge really helps to remind you of your goals. Wish this was a year long and you could add more challenges as you go.-
Meghan Jones 10/24/2018 2:29 PMGlad you enjoyed it. Thank you for participating and sharing your experience!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Rodney Sedillo 10/15/2018 2:49 AMCompost. Composting allows you to see the food waste in your own food chain. Plus, the end product is beneficial.
