Holly's actions
Community
Express My Support
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 45 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 3 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 6 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 1 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Create Your Own Action
I will make a larger mason bee house
Mason bees are natural pollinators. I have some Mason bees and a small house. They come out in the spring so the fall is an excellent time for me to take on creating a new house. I plan to get old used wood that has not been stained and drill new holes and create a large house. This will allow the Mason bee population to expand when they come out in the spring and refill all of the holes. It will allow me recycle wood instead of buying a new bee house.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Holly Smith 10/23/2018 10:17 PMAck! I think i may have accidentally clickes completed for my 5 min shower today despite failing. I will make up for it by completing a 5 min shower and not marking it here. Sorry -
Holly Smith 10/23/2018 10:13 PMOk. My 5 min shower dodnt work out today, but ive made so many improvements that im still proud! -
Holly Smith 10/23/2018 9:56 PMOne of my daily challenges has been to get extra sleep. I've been having sleep issues so i decided to tackle it by heading into my bedroom 1 hr early each night. By the time i was actually ready to sleep it was 30mins before i would normally have gone to bed. This has almost become a habit that i dont have to think about now! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Holly Smith 10/18/2018 8:04 PMI actually think that one of our biggest problems with water in our area is cooperation between neighbors. We have a lot of rain so there is runoff. When neighbors build next to each other without factoring in runoff we can cause the disputes between neighbors. For example if my property is at 1 height and the person builds Next Door by digging down into the Earth without planning for that, water runoff for my property will slowly Road my property down into their property. We do need to really think about where water is going when it hits the ground. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Holly Smith 10/18/2018 8:02 PMOur local pollinators are incredibly important. That's why I keep Mason bees. They come out in the spring for a few months and pollinate a lot of area. We want to make sure that we have beautiful trees as well as crops that can sustain us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Holly Smith 10/18/2018 8:01 PMI'm actually trying right now to change my night owl pattern so that I go to bed earlier. I'm trying to use melatonin and a light box to slowly shift my natural sleep pattern earlier in the day to match when I need to get up early for work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Express My SupportWhat sustainability issues are most pressing or prominent where you live?
Holly Smith 10/18/2018 8:00 PMI think the biggest sustainability issue right now in Portland is housing. How do we create enough housing for everyone while maintaining the environment? Our area is wonderful and beautiful so many people come here. We need to find ways to incorporate everyone who wants to live here while still maintaining the beauty and nature. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Holly Smith 10/18/2018 7:59 PMThe Next Step:I can be sure to turn off the water more quickly when I'm brushing my teeth. Or even when I'm washing my hands. I use a lot of water without realizing it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Holly Smith 10/16/2018 9:58 PMI'm planning to save up my extra money to help with Christmas presents. I'm really enjoying challenging myself in so many ways! -
Holly Smith 10/16/2018 9:57 PMLooks like I accidentally made my Mason bee project a daily challenge instead of a one-time challenge. Well now I've created a second additional Mason be home with a second piece of driftwood. I may end up making a couple more before the end of this challenge.
