Sam's actions
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those who produce my food in other regions of the world to make better choices when I shop.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching and recycling all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community.
Water
Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
I will save up to 15 gallons (56 L) of water a day by installing a low-flow showerhead.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Simplicity
Have a Garage Sale
I will have a group garage sale with friends, family, and/or neighbors.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Community
Host a House Party
I will host a house party with 4 friends and/or colleagues to watch a movie or present a guest speaker on an environmental issue that matters to me.

Sam S 10/06/2018 8:32 AMI really love writing down what I'm grateful for each day! It's really making me feel happy! -
Sam S 10/04/2018 2:07 PMFinding 3 things I'm grateful for each day I think will be a good thing for me. I am realizing it's making me become more aware of what's in my life and the things going on around me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Sam S 10/04/2018 10:27 AMThis one is going to be my hardest challenge I think. Our tap water is heavily treated and tastes pretty gross, so my family has used bottled water for years. I try to use my refillable bottle a lot, but at home it comes at a price. It's also convenient when I can just grab a bottle and go instead of having to fill mine up. I used one all day and then refilled it with filtered water at a restaurant when I left the house. It wasn't so bad. My family uses a lot of water bottles so maybe we can get a filter for the faucet instead. -
Sam S 10/04/2018 10:21 AMI'm excited to be doing Eco Challenge this year and pushing myself to stick to it! Day 1 was hard for me, but hopefully Day 2 will be easier now that I know how to make these changes! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
Sam S 10/04/2018 10:17 AMIt was really uncomfortable to eat mindfully the first time. No one else around me was following along and I felt really alone. I was able to feel all of these sad emotions I would've never noticed before because I'm usually wrapped up in my phone when I eat and so is everyone else. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Sam S 10/04/2018 10:15 AMThere's so much that's different when you're walking instead of driving! You actually have time to see what you're moving past. The leaves are all really changing, there's a cool wreath on one of my neighbor's doors that I really like and never saw before, and it's not as stressful as needing to pay attention to all the action on the road. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
