REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Do you feel that this fact applies to you? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
Jacqueline Trout 9/27/2018 2:40 PMI live within walking/biking distance of several grocery stores but always plan to stop by on my way to/from other locations. I think it would be lovely to get in the habit of just walking to the store for the small items I need each day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterTrace the water that flows down the drain from your house to the largest body of water nearby. What is the route it takes?
Jacqueline Trout 9/27/2018 2:38 PMAll the water that doesn't get absorbed by my yards ends up in the Spokane River. This isn't the best, as it picks up a lot of street contaminates on its way. I've always wanted to install rain barrels but living on a hillside in a house with a very, VERY high roof has always intimidated me. How would pumping the water to the garden work without expensive pumps? How can I get the spout down low enough to reach the barrels? I hope this is the year I figure these out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat is the main water source in your region?
Jacqueline Trout 9/27/2018 2:34 PMI've already ditched the front lawn. It is covered in native, drought-tolerant wildflowers that support local native bee populations. It's been a great year watching the bees and identifying each species. Time to figure out the back yard! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Jacqueline Trout 9/27/2018 2:32 PMThis is usually the hardest challenge for me. I love long, hot showers. The only way I can think to reconcile my showering habits with this challenge is to turn the water off until I need to rinse. Here's hoping it works! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Jacqueline Trout 9/27/2018 2:30 PMI usually buy from the market at 5th & Brown every weekend. Thankfully, they'll be open through October 31st! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Jacqueline Trout 9/27/2018 2:28 PMI usually have an annual herb garden that dies out in winter--I've as yet been unsuccessful at indoor herb gardening. I will try this year by doing a window-mounted system on my southern window. Fingers crossed!
