Anna's actions
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 5 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 5 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 3 minutes researching and recycling all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 5 minute(s) each day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and the nature surrounding me.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Anna Van Orsow 10/08/2018 4:14 PMToday I asked one of the workers in whittney what the process behind the dish rack is like. He told me that all of the food waste is taken away by some student volunteers to be repurposed/recycled correctly! This made me feel relieved that all the food I see on the dish racks isn't going straight into the trash can. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Anna Van Orsow 10/04/2018 8:40 AMI feel like it is so hard to understand these impacts because we don't SEE the results every day. If we expose and educate ourselves to the direct impacts to our environment, we may begin to make small changes. I am going to commit to learning new waste free alternatives! -
Anna Van Orsow 10/03/2018 8:46 AMI started a "my waste" list on my computer. I write the date, the item, the material used to make it and the destination of where I disposed of it.
