Beth's actions
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those who produce my food in other regions of the world to make better choices when I shop.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Food
Join a Local CSA
I will sign up for a local CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture).
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk for 45 minutes each day.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 20 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Beth Walsten 10/05/2018 1:03 PMExcited to get sign up for my favorite CSA for the fall/winter. Farmer markets in the summer months are fun to walk through and shop. When the weather gets cold, it's great to have local, seasonal food brought to you!-
Monica Martin 10/05/2018 1:49 PMGreat idea! I need to find a fall/winter CSA. Honestly, I didn't really know they existed but I'm excited for the hunt!

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go for a Daily WalkFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Beth Walsten 9/26/2018 6:22 PMI enjoy taking a long walk in the mornings. It's a great way to wake up the mind and body before tackling a day at work. I'm more focused and energetic all day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Beth Walsten 9/26/2018 6:21 PMLiving in the city, it can be hard to see the natural world as walk around the neighborhood or while rushing to catch a train. Some days, I have to hop on my bike and ride to the lake front or visit family outside the city to reconnect. Even visiting a farmer's market is a wonderful break. Too much inside/recycled air, non-natural lighting, and screen time makes us all have less energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Beth Walsten 9/26/2018 11:25 AMI have slowly been working to remove plastic bags, wrap, containers from my home kitchen. Using glass for leftovers and produce from the market is so much easier (especially for reheating). I am surprised at how many restaurants still put straws in without asking. I will take on this challenge and make sure to ask for no straw! -
Beth Walsten 9/26/2018 11:18 AMI am excited to be joining the challenge this year. Looking forward to October!
