Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

Excited to get sign up for my favorite CSA for the fall/winter.  Farmer markets in the summer months are fun to walk through and shop.  When the weather gets cold, it's great to have local, seasonal food brought to you!

Great idea! I need to find a fall/winter CSA. Honestly, I didn't really know they existed but I'm excited for the hunt!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Simplicity Go for a Daily Walk
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

I enjoy taking a long walk in the mornings.  It's a great way to wake up the mind and body before tackling a day at work.  I'm more focused and energetic all day.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

Living in the city, it can be hard to see the natural world as walk around the neighborhood or while rushing to catch a train.  Some days, I have to hop on my bike and ride to the lake front or visit family outside the city to reconnect.  Even visiting a farmer's market is a wonderful break.  Too much inside/recycled air, non-natural lighting, and screen time makes us all have less energy.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I have slowly been working to remove plastic bags, wrap, containers from my home kitchen.  Using glass for leftovers and produce from the market is so much easier (especially for reheating).  I am surprised at how many restaurants still put straws in without asking.  I will take on this challenge and make sure to ask for no straw!
