Nicole's actions
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 30-minute walk outside each day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 60 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Health
Learn More about Food Deserts
I will spend 15 minutes learning about food deserts and find out how I can advocate for healthy and fresh food in my region.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Nicole Wolfe 10/24/2018 11:23 AMOne main barrier in making the change to reusable bottles is convenience. While the switch is easier at home or at work, remembering to carry them with me when I go out is hard. I have several reusable bottles, and plan to get some more for multiple purposes. I think if I purchased a smaller bottle that sealed well and could fit in my purse, I'd be more likely to carry it with me.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Nicole Wolfe 10/24/2018 9:51 AMI was always getting mail that would go straight to the recycling bin, and a lot were things I could access online. I took just a few minutes to unsubscribe from unwanted mail and noticed a decrease in the mail I get in just 3 weeks. I also took some time to unsubscribe to unwanted e-mail, which means less screen time checking them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Nicole Wolfe 10/24/2018 6:01 AMThey keep flowers, plants, and our food flourishing. We would not be able to replace them - and therefore they keep us alive and the landscape beautiful. I look forward to planting a garden with native species flowers in the future! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Nicole Wolfe 10/24/2018 5:48 AMI used to always use 1 straw a day in the office for my water. I've replaced my plastic straws at home with metal ones, and have avoided using single-use straws in the office for this entire challenge! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Online Energy AuditWhat most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint?
Nicole Wolfe 10/22/2018 1:07 PMIt was great to see that my apartment is already saving energy, and small changes that I can make to increase that even more.
