mia's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Nature
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden each day, or work on starting one.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Simplicity
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Support a Sharing EconomyWhat are some of the barriers to sharing economies? What is your plan for supporting or creating one in your community?
mia yang 10/23/2018 11:28 AMI borrow books from public library, as well as check out/donate tools with the neighborhood tools library. In both cases, you might not find what you are looking for everytime or have to wait for a while. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
mia yang 10/23/2018 11:23 AMTo list a few things I do to incorporate "R's" into my lifestyle: re-purpose glass jars as storage containers/flower vase/candle holder; reuse old cloth as rags; reduce my carbon footprint by reducing energy usage; use reusable bags for grocery shopping; repair things as needed rather than buying new. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
mia yang 10/18/2018 4:45 PMBeing outside makes me feel alive and clears my mind. If people spends too much time indoors, stress and anxiety level would be higher, indoor air quality could also decrease overtime and lead to long term health problems. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Eco-friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
mia yang 10/17/2018 2:37 PMWater is considered abundant in the Pacific Northwest, and the quality of drinking water is good compared to many other places. If there are any water concerns in this region, it might be groundwater contamination from fertilizer runoff and such. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
mia yang 10/17/2018 2:27 PMSome the reasons might be: the cost of meat is very affordable; a lot of traditions and holidays celebration involves eating meat; a lot of traditional staple American food involves meat.
As for moving to a meatless food culture, education and trying out tasty meatless meals can be a start. -
mia yang 9/18/2018 4:32 PMI am excited for another year of Eco Challenge! I found more challenges that I want to do. More importantly, I was able to check off a number of actions as I already do because the actions I chose from previous Eco Challenge years have formed long lasting effect!
