I try to unplug appliances that are used infrequently to avoid any standby power draw.  Also, if I'm out of town, I'll unplug TV's and computers.  I wish I could unplug my router as well, but then I wouldn't be able to check in on my cats through the Nest Cam :)

    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

It feels great to know that every day, I'm keeping a disposable cup out of the landfill by using my reusable cup for my daily coffee.

    BTW... Contigo cups rule!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

If I don't have a reusable bag with me, I'll carry it out by hand or cart.  I keep a Costco box in my trunk so that I can just pile stuff in there and it doesn't go flying around.

I used to accept Target plastic bags because they were awesome.  Then they changed them to the cheap plastic and now they can go to hell.

If you're like me and like single serve coffee pods but hate the plastic waste... Costco (at least the Clackamas location) carries San Francisco Bay Coffee pods (compatible with most Keurig brewers) that you can dispose of in your municipal compost.  As a bonus, it's generally cheaper ($0.30 per cup) than most of the other brands and it comes in a French roast!
