Watch the short video below to learn the basics.
You'll be an 2018 People's Ecochallenge expert in no time!
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
I will spend at least 5 minutes visiting a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about the waste stream.
I will sign up for a local CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture).
I will spend 2 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
I will organize one of NWEI's discussion courses on food sustainability, 'Menu for the Future' or 'Hungry for Change', with my family, friends, coworkers, or classmates.
I will spend 2 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
I will start a recycling program at my workplace or school. If a recycling program exists, I will advocate for ways to improve and expand it.
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
A community can be brought to its knees without dependable power, often affecting the most vulnerable. I will write 2 letter(s) or email(s) each day to a public official or company to advocate for a more resilient power grid (e.g. microgrids, solar+storage)
I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
