Since starting the challenge, I have been much more diligent about my meal planning. I find that I am spending more at the grocery store, which was initially startling, but I am spending less overall by: (1) not eating out as much (or at least more intentionally); and (2) not wasting as much in food that goes to waste during the week.

Jason and I volunteered with Friends with Trees this weekend. We planted trees and shrubs in a wetlands area. It was rewarding, but a lot of hard work. I was impressed with all the kids that participated.

I got a cool reusable straw from an exhibit at the Jordan Schnitzer art museum going on about plastics - I definitely recommend this as a beautiful, educational display. (You could choose from a straw or reusable take-out utensils if you fill out their survey.)

I have been reading about an ayurvedic lifestyle recently, which is a holistic approach to mind, body, and spirit. Has anyone seen how the changes they have made during the challenge so far have made an impact on other areas of your life?

That's a great question! I continue bringing my awareness to gratitude. Even when I struggle with change or feel like I am not being my best self, gratitude can help me take in the whole picture. I'm intrigued by ayurveda and how ancient practices can fit into modern lifestyles.

    Simplicity Meditate
What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

I want to spend more time reflecting on the lessons and joys of each day. I have a wonderful, grounding morning practice of gratitude and prayer. I think I would benefit from prioritizing my evening practice, as well. They say it is easier to meditate in the morning than in the evening and I find that is true for me.

I was proud of myself, because I wanted to get dinner out last night, but still made my dinner at home, since I had meal planned and didn't want to waste the food I bought.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

Changing habits can be difficult. When I get into the habit of planning to have a clean reusable beverage vessel, it's easy. If I head to the coffee shop without my coffee cup in hand, I usually realize it after taking only a few steps. It feels really good to reuse things, instead of creating trash. If I forget to bring a reusable coffee cup, I might borrow one or decide not to get coffee. Or, sometimes I accept that I am creating trash and I remember that I'm only one step away from a good choice. :)

Yesterday, all my meals were vegan. I have been enjoying reducing the meat in my diet with this challenge.
