How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

My two main means of commuting to work are driving (Single Occupant Vehicle), and cycling.  I find I am way more engaged when I cycle as there is nothing in the way of seeing and hearing others around me.  And because I can't really rush when on a bike, my pace is more relaxed.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

On occasions when I do use a disposable item (cup, eating utensil, etc) I try to use it 2 or more times. By doing this one thing I can cut my use of disposable items by a factor 2 or more. This one thing makes me feel like I am making a contribution, even though I still use certain items out of convenience.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

I have been doing this for 20 years. In fact, I have a collection of water bottles from favorite places, like national parks.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Individually wrapped energy or nutrition / snack bars. I can also buy them in bulk without the packaging.

I live outside the city so my walks are nice and quiet, giving me time to take in my surroundings and enjoy the silence.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

I always keep spare reusable bags in the car... Because I do forget sometimes or there may be an unplanned trip to the store.

    Simplicity Less Screen Time
What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

I went to trivia with friends instead of watching TV at home.
