  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

When thinking about the mail I could reduce, my immediate thought is my ULine catalogs-- like Restoration Hardware catalogs, these giant things come once a month. Unsubscribing from them today was wonderful- I keep forgetting to and I order online anyway. My daughter plays with them but I think she has 3 in her room- she can play cataloging for the next decade with those! Hooray! I pledge to take action faster with anything like that in the future.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

Reflection on my nature walk- while typically I might not consider this a 'nature walk', I enjoyed a long day of walking around Disney's Animal Kingdom yesterday with specific intention to appreciate the lessons of nature the 'magic of Disney' was communicating. I loved listening to the sounds and appreciating the other-worldly beauty of Pandora and then moving into the gorilla trail and smelling, seeing and feeling the extensive habitat created for them. I did not go on any rides and simply enjoyed nature- was beautiful!

What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

For my reflection question on what I want to invest more time reflecting on, my answer is clearing my mind. I am tired of reflecting on everything actually! I feel as though I have too many thoughts going on most of the time and I cherish time that I can simply observe my thoughts coming and going like the tide, with no attachment.
I love my cell phone but knowing any thought or question can be answered in seconds has exponentially increased the amount of thoughts that can then come in!

Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

Buying local wildflower honey yesterday from Sledd's in Mims felt great. They had their worst season ever due to all the wet weather last spring. Now they have a giant field of wildflowers planted and crop maze instead of squash and other typical fall vegetables in efforts to bounce back. We did the wildlflower crop maze and supported the farm by also buying beautiful honey clearly made from all the buzzing happening along our walk!

Waste Visit a Waste Management Facility
Field trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you visit? What did you learn? Did you take anyone with you?

Going to the Cocoa Landfill along with a fellow Zoo conservation staff member, I was impressed with the level of organization in general. However, I will ask my colleagues here (and asked there) why, if there is a pile for metal, a pile for pallets and a pile for refrigerators, is there not a pile of plastic that made its way there? 99% of the debris I saw on top of the hill was plastic that either was disposed of incorrectly or is not able to be placed in a recycle bin (plastic bags). Has this been an on-going discussion / battle? I am assuming yes? Would love to understand more about this. Thx!

I'm working on organizing a tour of Waste Management's recycling facility for our group.  Not as easy as it sounds!  Will keep you posted as things develop.

I agree with you, Craig. WMngt seriously needs a PR consultant!  I want to tour the recycling facility, not the landfill.

I am planning a trip to the landfill this week. I will be interested to see the operation. I have asked some others in our condo building if they have anything to get rid of so I hope to have a full car of stuff to deliver. I personally think Waste Management is currently sending a mixed message about plastic recycling other than on plastic bags where they are very clear that they can't go in the bin. I am not sure why people have a problem with that but I have wondered where they go after being rejected at the recycling facility.

    Nature Practice Gratitude for Earth
Kathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How do we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?

For my reflection question, I agree that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation as gratitude spreads and expands most when practiced on things we do NOT ask for. When we cultivate gratitude for things that exist without our interference or individual creation, we develop respect and a deeper desire to protect them. If we are only thankful for things we "make happen" we make poor and selfish choices as a society.
