REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodAmongst the motivations for foraging are: a source of food; means of income; connecting with nature; cultural tradition; or transmitting "local ecological knowledge, and a means for stewarding local and native plant populations" (McLain et al. 2012, 13). Which of these would be your chief motivation and why?
Brie Baumert 10/19/2018 11:36 AMMy chief motivation for foraging would be connecting with nature because foraging provides an intimate way for me to learn more fully about all that nature has to offer to us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Brie Baumert 10/16/2018 8:53 AMIt seems that those most affected by global warming and environmental degradation are those who contribute the least to it. I spent some time researching indigenous populations in Multnomah County and was amazed by their concern and care for the earth. They are doing so much to protect the earth yet they still are affected by the consequences of pollution, poor air quality, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Brie Baumert 10/12/2018 9:07 AMElectricity impacts the environment by producing greenhouse gases and other air pollutants, contributing to the greenhouse effect. The atmosphere can then trap these gases, creating pollution. This pollution and waste can have a detrimental effect on animals and humans. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Brie Baumert 10/10/2018 11:18 AMSpending time outdoors, especially while living in a city, enhances my sense of place and how truly vast our world is. Even being in a city and finding a beautiful, secluded park within the city is a reminder to me of how we can find beauty and seclusion and peace even in the most seemingly chaotic and busy places. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Brie Baumert 10/10/2018 11:16 AMI would like to reflect more on my breathing, focusing on my body and the breaths it takes in and lets out every day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Brie Baumert 10/10/2018 11:15 AMIt's ingrained in our culture to eat meat. In a way, it has become the norm. I'm used to eating meat because my family often prepared meals with meat in it, and they make those meals because their parents did, and the chain goes on. The values I prescribe with meat-eating are habitual and self-pleasure. By eating meat, we are choosing the familiar and we are also choosing our own pleasure of eating meat with little regard for animals or the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Brie Baumert 10/10/2018 11:12 AMI can incorporate personal values like quality time with friends or spending time in nature by running outside with other JVs, running in parks, going for walks with friends, doing yoga with a community, and many more.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Brie Baumert 10/03/2018 4:29 PMGenerallly before bed I like to scroll through my phone but instead I am opting to read before bed. Not only have I gotten better sleep, but I enjoy ending the night reading as opposed to absentmindedly scrolling through social media.
