Kristin Belz 10/23/2018 11:25 AMi enjoy regularly volunteering, over the past few years, at the community radio station in my neighborhood. We broadcast around the metro region online xray.fm and on terrestrial radio 107.1fm. Environmentally, FM radio is an important source of info in the possibility of natural disasters--it is a way to get info communicated even if cell phone lines and internet connections are down. good to have a transistor-powered FM radio for emergencies. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Kristin Belz 10/19/2018 3:58 PMamazing and disappointing - i could find no place in metro portland that would take my residential use plastic bags... i did learn about those that aren't recyclable in the first place, but even the ones that are recyclable (used to be able to drop them at New Seasons, other places) are not able to be recycled by anyone in this whole town. i hope someone can tell me i'm wrong?? -
Kristin Belz 10/19/2018 3:52 PMi was very frustrated today to learn that there is nowhere in all of Portland where I can recycle plastic bags - unless i have literally a ton or two of them. i reuse them, but... just seems like a problem we need a better solution for. -
Kristin Belz 10/16/2018 1:40 PMi was out of the office at a conference this day and neglected to check in on my challenge- but i was using the reusable water bottle they gave us and love it already! -
Kristin Belz 10/16/2018 1:39 PMi wish i had started entering my actions earlier but i had a hiatus b/c i was too caught up in deadlines. bummer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Locally-Sourced MealsIf you were to only eat what is in season locally, what would be the hardest for you to give up?
Kristin Belz 10/16/2018 1:38 PMmaybe bananas - i don't think they'd ever be in season where i live! but they are so good and versatile!-
Emily Malaga Thompson 10/16/2018 2:08 PMCoffee and chocolate are the hardest to give up!

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Kristin Belz 10/16/2018 1:37 PMeven though we forget this, the world does not revolve around me or any one person. we are part of a large network of creatures and we depend on each other to exist and thrive - expressing my gratitude for others reminds me of my place in the greater world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsCan organic farming feed the world? Which side of the argument do you fall on? Why?
Kristin Belz 10/16/2018 1:36 PMof course it can. where there is a will there is a way, and we are smart people at heart. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Kristin Belz 10/16/2018 1:35 PMso many people think meat is the only real food, i think b/c they haven't been exposed to the beauty of veggies, but they have been exposed to tons of advertising campaigns about fast food beef, etc. and beef is equated with manliness, as in the old cave man mentality that hasn't really left us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Kristin Belz 10/16/2018 1:29 PMi like to make a veggie stock from Mark Bittman's easy recipe, using my veggie scraps.
