Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

Improve a Bus Stop

I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.

I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't get to all of my one-time challenges (I didn't improve a bus stop) but I'm pretty proud of completing pretty much everything else! I think I'll think about and maybe even assign myself a few more of these challenges still even though the official challenge is over - still a great way to change and create habits :)

Resisted grabbing packaged food at school before my ride home today and was super stoked to have a good meal without the guilt when I got there :) Hope everyone else's challenges are going well too!

One of my challenges was to carry around my trash that isn't recyclable or compostable but I haven't been doing that at all... mainly because whenever I do wind up with non-recyclable/ compostable trash, it's a food wrapper and I don't want my bag getting all gross. The idea of the challenge has impacted my behavior though I think because it's not very often that I do buy items with plastic packaging and I'm highly conscious of it when I do.

Almost broke down and got a coffee to go today but I refrained and stayed awake in class ! I did grab a free fortune cookie though without thinking about how it was wrapped in plasticcc :( The fortune inside read: As the wallet grows, so do the needs. Relevant for sure.

    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I often wind up with paper grocery bags and veggie bags because I don't have my reusable bags with me or because there isn't enough room in the bag I did bring. To break this habit, I think I should really try to avoid stopping by the grocery store unless I have a game-plan already. Since I pass by the market on my way home from school and work, I'm often tempted to stop in while it's convenient so that I don't have to bike all the way home and back but I usually end up wandering around aimlessly and not having enough space in my backpack for whatever I do end up buying. Making grocery shopping  a planned and intentional part of my day would reduce waste, save me money, and probably help me eat better too.

I lost track of my coffee thermos so I've been using the mugs at PCC to avoid the disposable cups. Today, though, I was rushed to get to work and grabbed coffee at the place across the street. I ended up having to throw the cup away which was a bummer. :( Definitely should've just gone without coffee but hopefully that will be the last slip up! Otherwise, my challenges are going well. It's kind of perfect that I started them right when I moved into my own place because it's helping me establish healthy/sustainable routines here from the get-go. Super grateful for that!

    Waste Carry my Trash
What one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?

    Stella Burlingame's avatar
    Stella Burlingame 10/10/2018 3:51 PM
To reduce my waste right away, I could put a mini bin for compost on the kitchen counter. I just moved into a new place and haven't established a solid routine/system for composting yet so I keep throwing teabags in the trash, thinking I'll deal with them later. I should bump it closer to the top of my list of priorities for sure.

I learned how to make and can applesauce today! One of my friends/former teachers makes almost all of his food from what he grows in his garden so he showed me how to prep, process, and can the apples into sauce. We also made yogurt using milk and cultures from his last batch - all super delicious and fun!

Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

I'm excited to learn how make and preserve sauce from apples and tomatoes and I love having pickled beets in the winter. Can't wait to get started on this!
