Rebecca's actions

Nature

Join An Outdoor Project

I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Express My Support

I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Try a New Way to Prep

I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Energy

Switch to Cold Water

I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

5-Minute Showers

I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Eco-friendly Gardening

I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Buy From a Farmers Market

I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Plant an Herb Garden

I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health

Support Pollution Reduction

I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Use a Reusable Mug

I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Energy

Power Down the Computer

I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Energy

Online Energy Audit

I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Nature

Support Local Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Nature

Spend Time Outside

I will replace 20 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.

The 5min showers have become very easy to master since I never have time anyways ;P
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

Many people think that just eating veggies doesn’t have it’s consequences. But truthfully, the mass production of crops sometimes leaves acres of land completed stripped of their nutrients. Now, the CO2 and methane emissions from the American meat production has definitely left a mark on the Earth as well, but I wish growing vegetables (local farmers do) cured the land of our pollutants.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Eco-friendly Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

San Antonio suffers from drought and then when the rains come... it pours for days causing major flooding. The communities in the heart of downtown probably have it the worst. The city's infrastructure was built in the hill country with tons of impermeable concrete and gutters overwhelmed with water.

It's easy to do the Power Down challenge now that everything in my room is on a power strip. But I did forget to turn it off on weekends.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I definitely use my thermos every morning for my hot tea. Aside from that, I have invested in reusable bags, produce bags, reusable silverware, and reusable napkins. I feel I do lack a straw again due to my ability to lose everything. I would like to also move away single packs of sugar, and get oatmeal and tea by the bulk.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Five minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?

Stop showering.. Just kidding. To reduce in water directly I would like to find a more effeicent way to do the dishes.  I would also like to move away from plastic shampoo, conditioner, and body soap bottles to reduce my overall shower carbon foot print.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

I preserved some green beans and made some banana bread with old brown bananas. The bread didn't come out the way I had hoped, but I tried.

It's easy to save water when you decide not to take a shower. Especially on test day

Today I did NOT spend my 20min outside. It was upper 80F yesterday and when I woke up it was in the 40Fs and raining. As a Texan, I typically don't see weather like this until December... if not January. However, could this be a result of the changing climate? Rain is typical for the changing of the seasons... Guess we will wait and see.
