Happy Monday, let's get the points growing for Rio Rancho this week.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Take Control
How do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?

we have invested in community through beautification projects, community volunteering, involvement with the local schools and through all of this get a great workout.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

We buy washable straws, we use reusable cups and we carry vacuum sealed thermoses for all the water we drink. There is probably more we could do but this is a good start i think.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

I did something awesome with Green chilies where I took the seeds, tops and stems and boiled them down with herbs, garlic, olive oil and other seasonings to create an amazing broth.   With this i made Rice and a home made chicken noodle soup that made all others pale in comparison.

give it a try... you can do something similar to this with any of your food "waste" to transform it into something amazing... into flavors you never thought you could achieve.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I make my coffee from whole bean every day.   I already have a microwave, smart phone, and plenty of pre-prepped food in the house to make things go faster.  Making and drinking coffee is the time i use to relax and slow down for a moment.... then, of course, everything speeds back up! ahhh caffeine!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

while I do still use plastic water bottles, we have a big collection of travel cups and vacuum canisters for daily use.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Car Share
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

I do this for nearly every volunteer or community service event I participate in. Not only does it help it also makes it much more fun!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Know My health
How do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?

    Jesse Dunaway's avatar
    Jesse Dunaway 10/16/2018 9:40 AM
I deal with it by facing it head on. Whether the outcome is negative or positive i work hard to understand what I learned from the experience. This helps me understand how to avoid the negative and create the positive experiences in life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health Go get a check up
How do you practice self care?
