Charlie's actions
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Charlie Wells 10/12/2018 4:50 PMThe next step in saving water is for me to reduce the amount of water that I use when I brush my teeth. I have a bad habit of leaving the water on when I brush my teeth and it is unnecessary.-
Sara Walley 10/31/2018 1:02 PMHi Charlie!

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Charlie Wells 10/12/2018 4:47 PMWhen you only spend time indoors you aren’t as aware of what all is around you. By exploring the areas around you it helps you to discover new things in your area. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Charlie Wells 10/12/2018 4:45 PMI use a lot of straws when I eat out, I can replace plastic straws with either a reusable metal or plastic straw. I can also just refuse straws and drink straight from the cup instead, which is an easier alternative. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Charlie Wells 10/12/2018 4:42 PMWhen I am stressed I spend time outside and it helps me to relax. I think that as people spend more and more time outside that nature will be forgotten and replaced by technology.
