Lucas's actions
Transportation
Choose a Carbon Offset
If buying a plane ticket, I will also buy a carbon offset.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 30 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Water
Install a Toilet Tank Bank
I will reduce the amount of water flushed and save up to 11 gallons (41 L) of water each day by installing a toilet tank bank.
Transportation
Go by Bike
I will commute by bike 5 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 5.13 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

Lucas Kappel 10/24/2018 9:08 PMJust completed an audit of or cleaning supplies. I was glad to see that we were doing a pretty good job of using green supplies, but found a few ingredients that were a little sketchy! -
Lucas Kappel 10/24/2018 10:08 AMI started riding a bunch of bikes yesterday, it is truly surprising how much a great bike makes riding much more enjoyable! Hopefully I will be getting a new bike sometime soon! -
Lucas Kappel 10/18/2018 9:24 AMHave a lot of days outside of the office coming up. It will be interesting to see how that will influence my commitment to the challenge. -
Lucas Kappel 10/17/2018 10:08 AMWent shopping for bikes yesterday and realized that my current bike is really hard to ride. This helped provide some context on why riding every day has been such a big hurdle to get over. -
Lucas Kappel 10/16/2018 11:23 AMI missed my bike home yesterday and I was kinda disappointed, I think riding home every day last week got me in the mood for a daily bike ride. I was not expecting to look forward to biking 5 miles every day. -
Lucas Kappel 10/15/2018 9:19 AMHad a really nice weekend and spent plenty of time outside. It reminded me that it's hard to want to care about the environment unless you take the time to experience what it has to offer! -
Lucas Kappel 10/11/2018 1:59 PMI purchased a carbon offset from BEF the other day to offset my holiday flights. I am really excited that I was able to do so since reduce amounts of flights is unlikely since no family lives in nearby states. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Choose a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Lucas Kappel 10/11/2018 1:58 PMUnfortunately I am not sure what I can do to reduce the number of flights I take each year (aside from offsetting the carbon). I live far away from friends and family and neither I or they are likely to move closer. I would imagine this is a common issue within the modern world and would be curious to know how other address the issue. -
Lucas Kappel 10/10/2018 9:04 AMInstalled a tank flow diverter in my toilet last night. It works really well and saves lots of water!

Lucas Kappel 10/09/2018 1:05 PMRiding home in the rain wasn't as bad as I thought it would be yesterday, it was actually relaxing. I got a waterproof 5 minute sand timer for showers. It has worked really well to keep track of my efforts.
