Kristen's actions
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Simplicity
Track my Purchases
I will spend 10 minutes each day maintaining a record of all my purchases and learning about my spending habits.
Community
Express My Support
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
Nature
Do Nature Activities
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 20 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Transportation
Choose a Carbon Offset
If buying a plane ticket, I will also buy a carbon offset.
Create Your Own Action
Increase Dialogue
Talk to at least one person in the office and one person outside the office about the EcoChallenge or something related to the actions I have committed to. The more people talk and learn, the more likely they will be to join in!
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Track my PurchasesWhat have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?
Kristen Mertens 10/18/2018 9:34 AMI already kept pretty good mental tabs on my purchases, but this has been great to actually track it. I can hopefully then look at multiple months collectively to see how I can make adjustments. Currently, my biggest opportunity I have observed to make changes is in entertainment costs on weekends - though it is definitely good to still have fun and enjoy life :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Kristen Mertens 10/18/2018 8:44 AMTurning off the shower when I am not rinsing (aka when applying shampoo, conditioner, etc.). This will be particularly difficult since we are now approaching winter.... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Kristen Mertens 10/18/2018 8:42 AMWhen we start with personal well-being and appreciating ourselves, we are better able to appreciate everything and everyone that is around us. By thinking about what we are most grateful for and what motivates us, we can choose to act and support causes that stem from our core values. Feeling this personal connection to the work we do and efforts we give towards often increases the impact we are able to have because we are more invested.
