Ariel's actions
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 30 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.

Work from Home
I will work from home 4 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 60 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 90 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 3 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk for 10 minutes each day.

Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 60 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Ariel Scrogham 10/23/2018 3:55 PMOne food choice that I could make that would do more good than harm, is to limit the amount of meat and increase the fruits/veggies I eat. Less meat consumption would lead to less CO2 emissions and increasing plants would mean more planted plants which is good for the earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my HomeTo what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Ariel Scrogham 10/21/2018 10:02 PMThe social determinants of health contribute to my health outcomes. Stress from being low income living pay check to pay check affects my health in so many ways. Stress can metastasize into bigger issues such as high blood pressure(check), obesity(check), heart disease(almost there), diabetes(not quite, but maybe) etc. Being financially stable would help me be stress free and therefore reversing my weight issue (money to buy more healthy foods and less carbs which are way more filling and last longer than fresh foods), lowering my blood pressure by reducing my stress and less cholesterol from all the carbs, I mean, the list goes on and this is one environmental factor. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Support Native CommunitiesIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Ariel Scrogham 10/21/2018 9:41 PMBalance is important to sustainability because what we take away we should give back. The way things are going now, we'll be desolate in no time. We need to put a halt to all the pollution, the garbage, the digging, the cutting, the fishing, etc. to allow the world the time it needs to heal and recenter itself. I'm afraid we've reached the point of no return! All of mankind must change, now! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Ariel Scrogham 10/18/2018 9:28 AMFood sovereignty will address the complex agrarian transition of modern food systems by eliminating GMOs and Pest/Insecticides that are being used by corporate food industries to meet the high demands of the growing population. These genetically modified and chemically mutated foods are genetically modifying/mutating and poisoning the people. If we were to revert back to people growing and hunting their own foods, health problems that we face will be extremely LOW compared to what we are seeing now. We need to take back and live our own lands! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Online Energy AuditWhat most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint?
Ariel Scrogham 10/13/2018 12:08 PMWhile learning about renewable energy and audits today, a BlueSky rep knocked on my door. I explained to them that I've received countless notifications about renewable energy but couldn't commit to $5 a month extra on my bill or any other hidden fees. After a long conversation about their other options, I finally signed up to receive 1 BlueSky Block for $1.95/month which helps our economy by limiting coals and fossil fuels and helps fund new community based renewable energy programs in Oregon. I'm also getting a free energy efficient box that will include 6 LED light blub, a bath tub and kitchen sink energy efficient products.

Ariel Scrogham 10/13/2018 11:22 AMSpent about an hour going for a walk this morning to the coffee shop on 42nd/Columbia and I brought my reusable cup with me! I was able to accomplish three tasks in one: meditated while walking and prevented yet another plastic straw from ending up in the ocean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Ariel Scrogham 10/10/2018 5:31 PMOver the weekend, I cleaned up my local bus stop by picking up trash and wiping it down. I believe public transportation is essential, it provides a form of transportation to those with out the means of having a motorized form of transportation of their own. The idea around humans utilizing public transport to minimize the high effects of CO2 that we emit is great but I see and hear folks defaulting to their own reliable form, thus increasing the polutant. Public transportation can meet the human needs by being consistent, reliable, and create equal access in areas outside of the city limits. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go for a Daily WalkFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Ariel Scrogham 10/10/2018 10:30 AMAt work: I find myself taking my walk when I feel the most unproductive! A 10 minute walk allows me time to re-configure my thoughts/priorities which give me the ability to refocus and get back on track.
At home: My family and I like to take Maui for a walk around the neighborhood which gives us time take in and enjoy our surroundings while improving/maintaining our health.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
Ariel Scrogham 10/05/2018 9:10 AMWhen practicing mindfulness while eating I am able to enjoy each savory bite, but also more in tune when my body/stomach fullness alert which keeps me from over-eating and feeling stuffed.
