Thomas's actions
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk for 20 minutes each day.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 30 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Thomas Shessler 10/20/2018 3:52 AMTime in nature restores balance in an unbalanced world. A reminder that we are part of something bigger. But only part, not necessarily the focal point. -
Thomas Shessler 10/16/2018 3:38 PMLet’s go, team! Doesn’t look like the government is going to do much about the environment, so this is more important than ever. -
Thomas Shessler 10/16/2018 3:37 PMCooler weather makes for longer walks! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?
Thomas Shessler 10/11/2018 8:59 PMWe used to compost all of the time, but the compost pile was in an inconvenient location and we fell out of the habit. Now it is in a better location and we already are seeing much smaller bags going to the waste station. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Thomas Shessler 10/11/2018 8:57 PMSo far, I have used the time to work in the yard. There is plenty of fall cleanup to be done- some of it things I usually don’t get done before snow, and then regret in the spring. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Thomas Shessler 10/11/2018 8:55 PMI have resisted going paperless on certain financial services, but the number of wasted statements from my retirement accounts is maddening. I need to call the office and see what I can do to opt out of more of them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go for a Daily WalkFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Thomas Shessler 10/11/2018 8:52 PMIt is a great time for reflection and meditation. I am working of focusing on the concept of forest bathing when I go for a walk in the woods. Taking the dogs along gives another perspective as I watch them explore the world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Thomas Shessler 10/11/2018 8:51 PMThere is a great hiking trail in our neighborhood. It is a good way to keep up with neighbors to invite someone along on a hike. -
Thomas Shessler 10/11/2018 8:46 PMI put the coffee grounds and tea leaves on the garden every day.
