Lynn's actions

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Forage for My Food
Amongst the motivations for foraging are: a source of food; means of income; connecting with nature; cultural tradition; or transmitting "local ecological knowledge, and a means for stewarding local and native plant populations" (McLain et al. 2012, 13). Which of these would be your chief motivation and why?

My chief motivator is tradition. I grew up in a secluded, rural area and foraging was a big part of our lives. There is one patch of blackberries that I would look forward to picking every year! I can still remember the dirt road we found them along :)

My family also foraged for morel mushrooms, asparagus, mulberries, plums, apples, and gooseberries. I didn't realize until I left how fortunate I was to have amazing tasting food. Nothing I've ever bought at a store has come close to what I ate growing up.

I was fortunate to have knowledge of the land passed down to me in my hometown. I'd love to be able to forage for food again, but honestly have no idea where to start in Omaha.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

Refuse is one I need to work on!  I don't want to be a bother to service workers who already have difficult jobs. I will work on speaking up more when offer/handed food items in bags or drinks with straws/lids.

I also purchased some glass reusable straws :) took my husband some convincing, but he agreed to them after learning they come with a cleaning brush!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

I found out my pet food brand has a bag recycling program! One less thing that would end up at the dump :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

Wasn't hard at all to make the switch! The only thing holding me back before was I lacked a mug with a lid. I picked one up from Starbucks that was free with a coffee purchase. Now I have a desk and travel cup :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Fix Leaky Faucets
Fixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency?

Finally fixed a leaky faucet in our basement :) Feels good completing a project and being more efficient!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Online Energy Audit
What most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint?

    Lynn Siegner 10/05/2018 7:44 AM
It was a lot worse than I expected :S I will definitely program my thermostat differently to help reduce usage when no one is home. Our house is fairly old so we some updates will be necessary in order to be more energy efficient.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

If I don't have reusable bags, I ask for paper bags instead of plastic or go without. I use paper bags for my recyclables throughout the week.

I will start keeping a few of my reusable bags in my car so I have access to them even when I make unexpected stops.

Adjusted my work laptop power options. Took just a few seconds and now I won't need to remember to power down when I'm away from my desk! Will do the same for my home desktop this afternoon.
