Susan's actions
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Water
Collect Rain Water
I will create a rain garden or bioswale, or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 8 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 4 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Susan Tanabe 10/24/2018 1:23 PMWe have bought metal straws! Though we rarely use straws, it is nice to have these. Bought one for each member of the family. -
Susan Tanabe 10/24/2018 1:22 PMQuite frustrated. actually! My team leader is helpful, I'm sure it is my error, however I could not add new challenges. Each time I tried, the response told me I must delete an old challenge. Upon trying that, it said I'd LOSE POINTS if i did so...! Five challenges is far too low. Why make a limit? -
Susan Tanabe 10/21/2018 12:36 PMGreat! I am trying to figure out how I can add more challenges.... five a day is far too low.-
Shirley Lamkey 10/24/2018 9:24 AMSorry, the help should have been forthcoming sooner!

Susan Tanabe 10/17/2018 3:49 PMHow do i remove a completed challenge? I need more than 5 a day!!! -
Susan Tanabe 10/14/2018 5:41 PMI did not get log in soon enough,. wasn't clear on how to do so, however I did begin these activities. Wish I could "get credit" for that... (-.-) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Susan Tanabe 10/14/2018 5:38 PMI've become offended, almost, when i see plastic water bottles at an event... and thrilled when i attend a meeting where everyone around the table has a water bottle! YAY! I found mine on the Safeway 1/2 price shelf. It is a metal "cup" with lid and straw, from Starbucks. Perfectly reusable and keeps water cold. I have a Chemeketa Community College one as well, however as it is plastic it does not keep water as cold. Love them both. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Susan Tanabe 10/14/2018 5:32 PMI do not drink coffee, however i love tea. I keep a cheap mug in the car... one which i wouldn't cry over if broken... just in case i have the opportunity to have tea. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
Susan Tanabe 10/14/2018 5:31 PMEasy! I haven't used paper or plastic bags for a LONG time ~ we have multiple cotton bags which i wash only when necessary, a cooler we keep in the car, and reusable plastic and glass containers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?
Susan Tanabe 10/14/2018 5:29 PMThankfully we have compost curbside pick up, which helps. We use brown/undyed paper towels so we can compost those as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Susan Tanabe 10/14/2018 5:28 PMHave nearly completed the process of getting all bills online and paying online, which feels great and keeps our mailbox free for fun stuff!
