    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

This position does not happen to me often. I really use reusable bags. I need to start to use them at more places due to I refuse to pay for a bag. (Yes I know at Kroger I'm paying for bags it just in the price of the food.) Place the reusable bags in your truck but a note in your phone with your grocery list to get bags. Yes, I have carry items in my hands to my car if I did not have a bag. Or I have taken the cart right to my car. Or I use the empty boxes in the store as things to carry my purchased items in. As a child my Mother would say "if there is a will there is a way". While is did not create this saying it means to me you have to want to change, help, donate, focus on others, and give. Think about what part you are playing in this sustainability process. Good Luck.

The non-profit I choose to support was March of Dimes. In the pass I use to go on there 26 mile long walks raised to $500. We walked from the foundation in  Heart Plaza to Tiger Stadium and then to Belle Isle and completely around it and back to Hart Plaza this took about 5 to 6 hours. Well now 30 years later I help in a different way. I volunteered  at their 2018 Signature Chefs Auction Event. I was in the Bottle for Babies Wine Caps booth where you donated funds for wine but you can only see the cap of the bottle. Our booth raised $2,000. There are many ways to support a worth charity. Choose one and be supportive.

Hi ECO Team: I want you to know this challenge on thanking and praising someone each day is working out wonderfully. I am getting back way more that I am giving out. It so easy to speak to someone and say something nice about them. Human interaction should be a wonderful experience. I pick every fifth person I see to compliment. The people so appreciate the attention. I work in two different building every week. The people all work for the same company but in one building most people walk around on the cell phone with their head down. (Sorry I feel like they do not want to speak) due to some people on the cell phone actually wave or bow their heads (as in I see you HEY! ) when they pass another person. In the other building you can not help but talk to every other person (and I do not know their names I've only been at the company for 40 years!) because they speak, wave and hold the door for you. What is the different in the culture of buildings population in my humble view it is age. When I was a kid some short 50 years ago there was no email, or text. We had to talk in person with one another to go places and to get projects done we actually enjoyed one another's company. Try to be aware of the people around you they may really need a smile and or compliment today! Change starts with you. Say Hello! Thanks for read my blog?  See it is easy! Good Luck.

How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Holly Windom's avatar
    Holly Windom 10/23/2018 5:17 AM
Again I say "Awareness" most of the time most people including me. Do the same thing the same time of the week. At the same place with the same people. Yes, sort of like a "Habit Trail". In order to incorporation the "R's" we have to get started on focusing on a change of lifestyle. I hear a lot of people sadly say "Well this is who I am". Not this is who you have let yourself become! Let start today. Reduce your garage, Reuse your grocery bags, Refuse to litter, repair pipes for clean water, repurpose your attitude to guarantee all of this other items will come to pass. It is easier that you think. Hard the part is getting started. Call a friend or family member do not try this alone.  Oops I am from the 1960's I meant text, youtube, intragram, facetime, email just connect on the level that move you to action. Good Luck!

I joined to challenge to encourage my self (that is biblical by the way) to be positive on the journey of life. Making and effort to eat well, keep the planet clean and my brain thinking positive in my humble view that should be one of our life missions! Sometimes I think is it really that hard or it is that awareness is not be passed down thru the generations? I'm all most 60 years old and now that I have raised my children and I'm a widow I have the time, money, will power, the focus and the effort to make a change. It so clear to me how bad it is needed in my life and maybe I can encourage others stop for a while and just smell the flowers and feel the wind and enjoy it. My friends and family ask me why do you volunteer so much. My answer is come with me just once and you will see.

How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

PRAYER! Daily usually twice a day I pray to God. I believe Jesus Christ died for my sins and I'm grateful to trinity (Father, Son and Holy Ghost). They keep me motived to be positive and aware that I could be homeless, with family, with they grace and mercy. I go to church, Sunday School, watch preaching on TV, listen to Podcast, ready books, all on goodness, grace and mercy. I really like the TV the "BIG BANG THEORY". But theory is what it is to me due to they still have not made dirt! (Yes the are growing things without dirt I know) Anyway, life is good the quality of life is great! I would like to continue the quality of life at a high level. That takes effort. Lets get started. Actually, studies like this help. Being aware is the start.

Community Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Keen Independent Research Foundation conducted a recent study that highlights the disparities in the availability of city contracts and loans to businesses, and how this disparity correlates to owners as people of color. The study showed that Minority businesses enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you address systemic racism?

    Holly Windom's avatar
    Holly Windom 10/19/2018 5:38 AM
First lets talk about knowledge. Small minority business are not even awareness of such contracts. Unless your involved (that a dirty word I know) in the community, city, state, government in your industry. You as a owner of a business have no idea what in your area is available to you. The opportunities are not advertised and most business are referred or selected. Most of the time minority business are islands not attached to the main land. Yes this hurt them and Yes they need to make and effort to be more visible but that cost money. Not because I worked 40 years at Comerica but EVERYONE in business and or employed needs to have at lease one talk with a money manager, business consultant or a life coach. I promise your outlook on getting where ever your headed will be enhanced. Good Luck

Hi ECO team: I love my usable bags. I ask for them as gifts when the holidays come around. I suggestion the next time you give a gift place it in a usable bag. Shopping at Aldi , Save a Lot, Whole Food & Trader Joe's promotes this sustainable act. They come in all sizes and colors. Something we have to make each other accountable and that may just work out for all of us. If you not using all the plastic bags at your house. Give them to a Dog park or a food bank but reuse them too!

My Grandchildren! The next generation  I have 6 and I'm concern for them as adults what kind of produce will they be able to eat. Fast forward 40 years my young grand son Calvin will me 41. Is he going to be able to eat an apple off a tree grown out doors?  Or will he take his kids/grandkids to a (in door) farmed Apple Orchard? Scary to think it will be from a indoor chemical grow soil and a item they now call a tree. We are in more trouble that we think. Watch channel 56 about the future of farming.
