  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

Feed it to a pet, since they seem to be the only ones who can seem to digest it. Or eat them ourselves, and find a way for them to be more enjoyable.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Buy Used Clothes
Do people with economic privilege have a responsibility to consume and own less? How can the concept of "reduce" be presented to those who may be struggling to have enough food, clothes, shelter?

We can try support those who cannot support themselves. And instead of throwing out our used things, we can donate it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Improve a Bus Stop
How can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

You can try walking, or biking. If you need to get somewhere faster, then you can use a bike which is fast, but also isn't as bad for the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Track my Purchases
What have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?

    Xuning Ying's avatar
    Xuning Ying 10/21/2018 9:56 AM
I have noticed that I sometimes make purchases that I don't really need. but I purchase the Item anyways because I want it. I will probably try to cut down the amount of unneeded items in my cart.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Xuning Ying's avatar
    Xuning Ying 10/21/2018 9:50 AM
I regularly use plastic bags, and bottles, just because they're somewhat cheap and convenient.  I could substitute the plastic bags with paper ones and use reusable water bottles.

The sun, the moon and the stars would have disappeared long ago... had they happened to be within the reach of predatory human hands.  ~Havelock Ellis, The Dance of Life, 1923

We are putting the things we actually need to survive, for the things that we don't really need. I ask, in the end, how do we want our actions to reflect on ourselves? Where will we be in a few decades because of our actions today?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Organize a Course
How can you use NWEI programs to help mobilize your community to take action toward a sustainable future?

    Xuning Ying's avatar
    Xuning Ying 10/16/2018 3:54 PM
We can raise awareness of how we can help the planet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Car Share
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Xuning Ying's avatar
    Xuning Ying 10/15/2018 5:02 PM
Yes, since most of the places we go are public spaces. And for example for orchestra rehearsals, we have to drive all the way to Saratoga, so carpooling could save a lot of energy and not to mention gas.
