REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Cody Bargholz 10/24/2018 1:21 PMHistorical water pollution, forest fires and radon are tops. Water pollution from factories and mills, most of which are closed down, introduced so much lead into the water table that it is going to take a long time for the rivers to clear up. Yearly major forest fires negatively affect air quality and radon is giving people with inadequate home ventilation cancer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Cody Bargholz 10/24/2018 1:14 PMI think starting back on eating fruits and vegetables from an all meat diet. -
Cody Bargholz 10/23/2018 2:46 PMI wish one of the daily challenges was to take a cold shower every day. That would be fun to reflect on. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Cody Bargholz 10/23/2018 9:11 AMProbably not. UberPool is a way more practical option for me because of where I live. You can car pool without the hassle of organizing it yourself. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Cody Bargholz 10/23/2018 9:09 AMYes. It's almost unbelievably addicting. After breaking the habit you don't really crave food in general the same way anymore. This is especially true when you cut out all processed foods which include refined carbs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Cody Bargholz 10/23/2018 9:07 AMIt's very practical in the Northern latitudes even for stone age cultures. I think poorer indoor air quality may be a problem for immune function. -
Cody Bargholz 10/23/2018 9:03 AMScooting home from work has helped with this challenge if anyone else is doing it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Cody Bargholz 10/23/2018 9:00 AMPemmican. My goal is to learn how to make it to help travel healthy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Cody Bargholz 10/23/2018 8:59 AMCorrect. I'm near the end of this challenge and feel way better. I'm sure cutting out sugar was the biggest factor. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Cody Bargholz 10/23/2018 8:57 AMWell I'm not eating vegetables. Eating a pure meat and animal products diet makes this challenge fairly easy depending on the cuts of meat you buy.
