Sean's actions
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Sean Cunningham 10/22/2018 1:50 PMThis has certainly been a fun and eye-opening event. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Sean Cunningham 10/19/2018 9:53 AMI have chosen the straw for this challenge, But I think to-go containers and drink packaging is really a larger volume for me. I shall make a conscious effort to reduce these items. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Sean Cunningham 10/19/2018 9:52 AMMetal cups don't make it through the metal detector, Plastic re-usables don't hold the heat as efficiently. The best choice for a slow drinker like me is the metal cup. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Sean Cunningham 10/19/2018 9:50 AMThe local water has a significant amount of calcium carbonate and other impurities. I will investigate filtering methods to eliminate the particulate. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Sean Cunningham 10/19/2018 9:48 AMMy energy usage is lower than others in my zipcode. This weekend, I shall investigate the power usage of Bluetooth capable devices to try to further reduce the usage. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Sean Cunningham 10/12/2018 9:35 AMUtah Plunder and Loot uses coal fired and natural gas production. Bonneville power uses Hydro-electric. All forms of generation have pros and cons. Of the forms used in this area, Hydro would provide the least impact to the environment and the impact is local. Carbon based fuel generation (I loathe the term fossil fuel) provides a local and global impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Sean Cunningham 10/09/2018 8:29 AMI have been contemplating, to-go containers and the boxes I ask for to take home food I haven't finished. I am probably order to-go meals twice a week, by taking the time to eat the meal on-site, I will save a considerable amount of waste. Also, I am thinking about putting some storage containers in my backpack. The boxes the restaurants give you to pack home left-overs often leak and are often one use poly. I'm not really sure how this will work, more to come. -
Sean Cunningham 10/09/2018 8:09 AMWith the fall colors coming on, don't forget to check your weather stripping around doors and windows.-
Monica Martin 10/09/2018 8:18 AMThe new stripping is sitting in front of my front door so that I have to step over it to get in and out. That's the good news. The bad news is it's been there for 3 or 4 days now......

Sean Cunningham 10/08/2018 9:44 AMTo help with the straw issue, I bought a reusable glass with a twist on lid and straw. I keep the straw in the car.-
Monica Martin 10/08/2018 9:58 AMThis is my trick too!
