Erin's actions
Create Your Own Action
Greenhouse Gas Reduction
I will reduce my greenhouse gas emissions by idling my vehicle less and driving only when necessary. I will turn off my car when stopped, and I will carpool and walk more. I will also bundle my errands and plan them out so that I can reduce the mileage I have to drive.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 10 minute(s) each day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and the nature surrounding me.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 60 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 10 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Community
Express My Support
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 20 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Erin Eddins 10/15/2018 10:35 AMFor my daughter's birthday this year, I have finally signed up for the city recycling program. She has been after me since we bought our house a few years ago, and this is her year. Her early Christmas gift was a composting bin that we purchased and assembled this summer.-
Veronika Vazhnik 10/15/2018 2:05 PMErin, both the recycling and composting solutions are wonderful! I am glad to hear what presents your daughter wanted - if all of us followed her example, we would be living in a waste-free zero-carbon world.

Erin Eddins 10/12/2018 8:21 PMI am still working toward the 7 hours, but considering how little I used to get, I am sleeping considerably more now, and I am almost there! I feel great! Still sleepy, but nowhere near where I used to be. Amazing! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Erin Eddins 10/10/2018 2:28 PMI hope to be able to save up for new appliances. I would like to replace my existing ones with more energy efficient kitchen appliances and a new washer and dryer. -
Erin Eddins 10/10/2018 2:18 PMReducing my impact in little ways that are not on the lists has been fun as well. My daughter and I focus on taking any leftovers for lunch and having them for dinners later in the week. We also try to take reusable containers with us if we are going to be going out to eat and expect to have leftovers to take home with us so that we don't have to use the containers from the store to add to the landfills. -
Erin Eddins 10/08/2018 10:21 AMI went to the store for birthday gifts and realized that I had forgotten my reusable bags. I purchased new ones, and decided to use them as the gift bags for the presents instead of using wrapping paper or paper gift bags. This is a practice that I used to use and had forgotten about, but I will be adopting again!-
Melanie Shirling 10/08/2018 11:24 AMI do this, too! Instead of gift bags, this is all I do. Usually I have bags from conferences and meetings, and I can use those. I even give wedding gifts in reusable grocery bags. -
Veronika Vazhnik 10/08/2018 11:22 AMErin, this is a wonderful idea! I will keep it in mind for the presents that I give. -
Kimberly Scully 10/08/2018 11:10 AM
That is such a great idea...I will have to do this from now on. Thanks!

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my HomeTo what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Erin Eddins 10/04/2018 3:42 PMAllergies are getting worse and stranger every generation. Health issues are also getting more serious every day. My family and I have noticed an increase in breathing issues every year, especially during wildland fire season. We have to rely more and more on inhalers when the fires are heavy, and sometimes they don't help as much and additional measures are needed. I think that this is partially due to the decrease in air quality in daily life and partially because of the additional toxins released every year in the smoke. -
Erin Eddins 10/04/2018 3:33 PMThe daily challenges are so much fun, and they make me feel good about myself and my contribution to the planet! -
Erin Eddins 10/03/2018 9:51 AMI am excited to share this experience with my friends and family! My Environmental Science class last semester was a great experience to share with my daughter, and inspired her to package reusable utensils to keep on hand in the kitchen and the car. we are even motivated to check the ingredients of our laundry soap to make sure that there are no phosphates so that we can look at using cloth napkins instead of disposable ones! -
Erin Eddins 10/02/2018 6:21 AMI have been practicing for this challenge and participating in several of the activities already. My daughter and I have been actively using our composter again, reducing our use of non-recyclables, and paying closer attention to the ingredients of our cleaning products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Erin Eddins 10/02/2018 6:17 AMI would like to start to go to bed earlier and give myself more time to relax before bed. I have been listening to audiobooks instead of watching television.
