Greenhouse Gas Reduction

I will reduce my greenhouse gas emissions by idling my vehicle less and driving only when necessary. I will turn off my car when stopped, and I will carpool and walk more. I will also bundle my errands and plan them out so that I can reduce the mileage I have to drive.

For my daughter's birthday this year, I have finally signed up for the city recycling program. She has been after me since we bought our house a few years ago, and this is her year. Her early Christmas gift was a composting bin that we purchased and assembled this summer.

Erin, both the recycling and composting solutions are wonderful! I am glad to hear what presents your daughter wanted - if all of us followed her example, we would be living in a waste-free zero-carbon world.

I am still working toward the 7 hours, but considering how little I used to get, I am sleeping considerably more now, and I am almost there! I feel great! Still sleepy, but nowhere near where I used to be. Amazing!

What do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?

I hope to be able to save up for new appliances. I would like to replace my existing ones with more energy efficient kitchen appliances and a new washer and dryer.

Reducing my impact in little ways that are not on the lists has been fun as well. My daughter and I focus on taking any leftovers for lunch and having them for dinners later in the week. We also try to take reusable containers with us if we are going to be going out to eat and expect to have leftovers to take home with us so that we don't have to use the containers from the store to add to the landfills.

I went to the store for birthday gifts and realized that I had forgotten my reusable bags. I purchased new ones, and decided to use them as the gift bags for the presents instead of using wrapping paper or paper gift bags. This is a practice that I used to use and had forgotten about, but I will be adopting again!

I do this, too! Instead of gift bags, this is all I do. Usually I have bags from conferences and meetings, and I can use those. I even give wedding gifts in reusable grocery bags.

Erin, this is a wonderful idea! I will keep it in mind for the presents that I give.

That is such a great idea...I will have to do this from now on. Thanks!

To what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?

    Erin Eddins's avatar

Allergies are getting worse and stranger every generation. Health issues are also getting more serious every day. My family and I have noticed an increase in breathing issues every year, especially during wildland fire season. We have to rely more and more on inhalers when the fires are heavy, and sometimes they don't help as much and additional measures are needed. I think that this is partially due to the decrease in air quality in daily life and partially because of the additional toxins released every year in the smoke.

The daily challenges are so much fun, and they make me feel good about myself and my contribution to the planet!

I am excited to share this experience with my friends and family! My Environmental Science class last semester was a great experience to share with my daughter, and inspired her to package reusable utensils to keep on hand in the kitchen and the car. we are even motivated to check the ingredients of our laundry soap to make sure that there are no phosphates so that we can look at using cloth napkins instead of disposable ones!

I have been practicing for this challenge and participating in several of the activities already. My daughter and I have been actively using our composter again, reducing our use of non-recyclables, and paying closer attention to the ingredients of our cleaning products.

I would like to start to go to bed earlier and give myself more time to relax before bed. I have been listening to audiobooks instead of watching television.
