REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Join my Neighborhood AssociationHow can your community support inclusive decision making?
Johanna Ficatier 10/24/2018 9:29 AMthrough neighborhood associations, everyone has more access to a network, more opportunities to share information (receive information and express opinions on problems that matter to us), and thus it helps with more inclusive decision making. -
Johanna Ficatier 10/24/2018 8:44 AMAlready the end of the challenge! I have started so many improvement projects and getting more involved in the community! let's all keep up the hard work! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Johanna Ficatier 10/24/2018 8:42 AMI think the least effort / biggest impact we can do to lower carbon emissions is to adjust the thermostat! Wear sweater in the house in winter, accept to be a little (reasonably) warm in summer... I do that in my house, but I wish businesses would do that as well. I often feel too cold inside stores / restaurants in summer, and too hot in winter... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Johanna Ficatier 10/24/2018 8:33 AMI think interactions between residents is key to create a sustainable community, as it increases our sense of safety and openness. Bringing people together through volunteer activities is a great start, as it helps connect people with different background and lifestyle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Fix Leaky FaucetsFixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency?
Johanna Ficatier 10/22/2018 7:25 AMnext steps would be changing all faucets, toilets, and then appliances (washer, dishwasher...) to energy efficient ones -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Install a Low-Flow ShowerheadHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Johanna Ficatier 10/22/2018 7:20 AMI think that diversification of water supply sources as well as more sharing would enable us to be more water resilient. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Connect with a NonprofitWhat inspires you to act toward a more sustainable community?
Johanna Ficatier 10/18/2018 6:33 AMWhat comes around goes around... I think we are all facing some times in our life when we need help, so I think it's just normal to provide help to other in needs and overall make the world a better place -
Johanna Ficatier 10/18/2018 6:31 AMsince started this challenge, I have started various efficiency improvement project around the house and I'm really glad I did! it feels good to feel I'm participating as I can in protecting our beautiful planet earth! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Drive LessHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Johanna Ficatier 10/18/2018 6:29 AMgrowing up in Europe where we have a lot of public transportation options (bus, train, etc.) made me realize that driving is not the most environment friendly mode of transportation. That being said, I still use my car, but try to minimize its use by combining trips, carpooling, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Support Native CommunitiesIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Johanna Ficatier 10/17/2018 6:59 AMWe depend heavily on natural resources to live, but we need to understand that those resources exist in limited quantities and we should not use more than we need. For example in our society we waste a lot of food, whereas the indigenous only kill / harvest when necessary and make the most out of what they kill / harvest.
