Lisa's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 20 minute(s) each day.

Lisa Lam 10/24/2018 9:07 AMThanks for organizing such a fun challenge. I feel like I've built some great habits that I can keep up! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Lisa Lam 10/22/2018 7:46 AMOther ways to reduce my electricity usage: turn off lights when I leave the room, turn down the temp on my water heater, unplug devices/chargers, make sure that I run full loads for my washer and dishwasher, and use the toaster oven instead of regular oven for small items. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Lisa Lam 10/17/2018 11:36 AMWhen I wash my fruits and veggies, I try to save the water to water my plants outdoors. This is usually helpful during spring and summer. I haven't figured out to reuse that water during fall and winter when we have a lot of rain. We also replaced all three toilets in our home to reduce our water footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Lisa Lam 10/17/2018 11:35 AMMy child goes through a lot of paper when he draws, so I make it a habit that he uses paper that would have been recycled, but that has a clean back page. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Lisa Lam 10/17/2018 11:33 AMI try to take walks with my friends multiple times a week to get exercise and catch up with friends. When I am able to do that, exercise doesn't feel like a chore.-
Jamie Lomax 10/17/2018 11:35 AMThat's a great idea. I used to do a long walk with a friend every Wednesday after work. It was good exercise and gave us a chance to catch up each week.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Lisa Lam 10/17/2018 11:32 AMUnfortunately, it doesn't surprise me. I think we all make excuses out of convenience and do what's easier than try to be mindful regarding food and other choices we make. I'd much rather use that money for a vacation or save it for retirement.-
Jamie Lomax 10/17/2018 11:38 AMThis is not surprising to me either... we compost, but even then, it's a lot of food sometimes. We've been working on "second uses" for food scraps. For example, we save veggie cuttings in the freezer to make vegetable stock, and we just found a recipe for homemade apple cider vinegar using apple peel scraps.
