I stepped away from checking in regularly, but I'm now back on track.

Participating in this challenge has gotten me to reexamine my travel. Came to work using public transportation and I loved it! I am hoping to start using public transportation at least once a week when I don't have to pick kids up from school. If the public transportation option were accessible for my older son, I would convince him to use it. Unfortunately, not a possibility now.

I find that eating mindfully is not as difficult as I thought it would be. The ancillary benefits make it really worthwhile.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Switch to Cold Water
What do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?

    Michelle Maranowski's avatar
    Michelle Maranowski 10/08/2018 5:04 PM
I don't know that I will do anything with the money saved. I think that this will provide the evidence for my family to pursue other ways to become more energy efficient.

    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?

I agree with Michael Pollan on this one. However, diabetes runs in my family and while I'm doing my best to control this by eating healthy, prolonging the actual onset in myself, I think that if my doctor recommends that I move over to insulin or pills I will do so. My hope is that my focus on reducing processed foods will prolong things for a good while. It's also fun to think of eating healthy with my sons. They are starting to get into it. They take it as a puzzle or challenge!

Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?

By empowering farmers to put together ancestral learning with modern learning. Taking into account the value of biodiversity and "suitedness" of seeds to their native environment w.r.t. yield, nutrition, culture, etc. We see the value in food sovereignty in both of these ways.

While I didn't choose watching these documentaries as a challenge I do want to check them out.

I switched over to washing my clothes in cold water last week! I also switched to cold water detergent. According to a NYT article I read, cold water detergent is specially formulated to work better in cold water. The family is a bit dubious, but we are giving it a whirl!

How is this going? I've used cold water for years, (mostly cause I'm cheap :) - I don't think I noticed a difference, have you?
