Jamie's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 5 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 30 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 30 minute(s)
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 5 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.

Connect with a Nonprofit
I will connect with a local nonprofit, environmental or otherwise, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Jamie Mitchem 10/22/2018 10:34 AMThere is a major disconnect between consumers and the sources of their food, especially in urban environments. When meat is readily available in pre packaged containers at the store, you don't take the time to think about where it came from. Meat consumption in America is easy and convenient. It's everywhere and you often have to go out of your way to make special requests for vegetarian options. Shifting this thinking is tough. Maybe we should start by opting in to meat filled options, instead of opting out? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Jamie Mitchem 10/22/2018 10:29 AMStarting my day with a cup of coffee is a daily habit of mine, so switching to a reusable cup has a significant impact on the environment. Knowing that I am doing my part to keep disposable cups out of landfills makes it taste a little better. :)
