REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Katherine Ozawa 10/24/2018 9:51 AMI currently grow plants in Mason jars, but have dreams of windowsill gardens. Inside, I feel I have to enclose them more because of the bugs that are found in my older apartment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Katherine Ozawa 10/23/2018 9:57 AMI prefer to run with other people (to distract me from the running part) and catch up en route. Hiking is my activity of choice on my weekends, because I miss access to trees and fresh air during the week. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go by BikeHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Katherine Ozawa 10/23/2018 9:56 AMRiding transit gives me an opportunity to people watch, and is more convenient for certain errands. Walking/running/biking really increases your awareness of the city and its infrastructure, while also providing more moments of unexpected joy. I didn't realize how much public art we had! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Katherine Ozawa 10/23/2018 9:53 AMIn some ways, burgers and fries have become an integral part of the American identity and experience. We are also always on the go, making fast food really appealing. We can begin shifting this meat-focused food culture by increasing access to fresh produce in food deserts, providing more vegetarian options at restaurants, and reminding people that food should be nourishing and enjoyable, not just eaten out of convenience. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Katherine Ozawa 10/21/2018 12:31 PMIt surprises me that this figure is so low. I know that I am still figuring out how much to purchase week-to-week and am guilty of throwing away food. I would rather use the money to create a small garden for my patio. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Heat and Cool NaturallyWhat are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?
Katherine Ozawa 10/09/2018 4:00 PMHeating my apartment naturally in the winter and to grow my own herbs for cooking
