Tom Peterson 10/09/2018 4:17 PMI watched a video about meat in the American diet. I'm not giving up meet, but I am reducing how much meet I eat, espeically for lunches. I order veggie sandwiches or veggie burritos now. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Tom Peterson 10/09/2018 4:16 PMAmerica is a place of luxury. Meat was once a luxury item, but as we've become a rich country, everyone has shifted to living that life. When it comes to food, this means meat for every meal. I've conscientiously made an effort to reduce the amount of meat I eat. I order veggie sandwiches or burritos for lunch, and rarely eat meat for breakfast. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Tom Peterson 10/09/2018 4:14 PMLuckily I live in an easy place to get fresh produce. Most of our produce at the store comes from within 90 miles. Sacramento is known as the "Farm to Fork" capital of the US. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIf you were to only eat what is in season locally, what would be the hardest for you to give up?
Tom Peterson 10/09/2018 4:13 PMThe hardest thing for us to give up would be cereal! Me and my kids eat about two bowls a day, before school and when they get home, before I start cooking dinner. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Tom Peterson 10/09/2018 4:12 PMI'm going to bake at least one loaf of bread each week this month. We've already baked two loaves this month. Banana bread and pumpkin bread.
