I do enjoy the EcoChallenge quite a bit.  Maybe it is the reminders to be more sustainable.  Maybe it is just being amongst people who have the same goals. Maybe it is just fun to interact with the website.  Anyway, I have fun doing the EcoChallenge!

I am thinking the best way to help reduce our collective carbon footprint is to shop at the most sustainable retailers we can.  When there is money to be made by being the most sustainable, more companies will oblige.

    Waste Recycle Everything I Can
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

It is interesting finding out what can and can't be recycled.  In my readings I came across a term "wish recycling" when people try to recycle what they really want to be recyclable, like greasy pizza boxes or plastic bags, but are not recyclable.

I think maybe we should start having what not to recycle classes!

Picking "Tend a Garden" as one of my challenges had gotten me outside to our works community garden.  It is awesome to play with plants at lunchtime!!!

Whenever I go to Eagle Fern Park with my kiddos I think about how truely awesome the earth is and am glad we have wilderness left to go experience.  It's why I am a member of the Sierra Club.

I am participating in the October Eco Challenge because it is a great place to be encouraged to be more sustainable.

We are going to give an aloe vera  plant to the first six people from our Branch who sign up for the Eco Challenge.  Hopefully we get some takers!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

We have started "Food for the Future" but have stalled.  I am going to try and kick start our monthly course work again as I believe it is important for Green Team Meeting to not just be about planning and brainstorming but to be a place our desire to be sustainable is nurtured and fed.  Yeah, sounds hokey but whatever.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

When I only have a few item I carry them out with no bag.  If there is a reusable bag for sale (usually $1 or $2) nearby I will purchase it and then have an extra reusable bag.  If I forget all of my reusable bags, I will opt for paper.
