Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Forage for My Food
Amongst the motivations for foraging are: a source of food; means of income; connecting with nature; cultural tradition; or transmitting "local ecological knowledge, and a means for stewarding local and native plant populations" (McLain et al. 2012, 13). Which of these would be your chief motivation and why?

I really like connecting with nature and gaining knowledge about indigenous food sources.  Of late, I've been particularly interested in wapato, a native root plant similar to potato and common on Sauvie Island near my home.  I've yet to try it myself, but that's my goal.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?

I'm finding that it's harder than I thought to discern needs vs wants.  Some things are obvious--medicine vs another pair of shoes, for example.  However the grocery store is fraught with conundrums:  coffee?  fabric softener?  need or want?
Not the most important things I'll decide today, but still interesting to think about each item that goes into my cart...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Avoid refined sugar
Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?

Addicted to refined sugar? No, but do I have to hit rock bottom?
My strategy for avoiding sugar when the mood strikes: walk the dog. Good for her, good for me! *attaches gratuitous dog picture*

Not going to let donut ambush of yesterday get me down ("avoiding" refined sugar!).  Stand back, sugar!  You will not defeat me this day!  💪
