Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Water
Install a Toilet Tank Bank
I will reduce the amount of water flushed and save up to 11 gallons (41 L) of water each day by installing a toilet tank bank.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 60 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
kalise rucker 10/19/2018 11:10 AMIt's so difficult to understand the impact because we send our problems away! Out of sight, out of mind. I feel strongly that I would like to make the most minimal impact I can. -
kalise rucker 10/08/2018 7:41 PMGreat! It's good to take stock of how to lessen my footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
kalise rucker 10/04/2018 9:10 AMPracticing gratitude everyday by the practice of writing it down helps motivate me to look for things to be grateful for! It helps me focus more on the positive. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
kalise rucker 10/04/2018 9:08 AMThis doesn't surprise me at all! I read an article that said more Americans are shunning leftovers than ever before. I'm really making a point to create a meal plan, stick with it (so difficult sometimes!), and then complete the cycle by eating the leftovers.
I'd use the $1,500 to travel. :)
