Sophie 's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 6 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Nature
Do Nature Activities
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 10 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 3 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Sophie Waimon 10/23/2018 10:14 AMWhile I don’t live in a city, there are definitely pollutants around. I did research on the pollutant level in Lake Michigan and It was very interesting -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Sophie Waimon 10/07/2018 9:38 AMI was at a restaurant with my family last night and we all agreed not to use straws. Since they are plastic they do not breakdown and you can only use a straw once. This makes them very bad for the environment and I am glad that I made a small impact -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Do Nature ActivitiesWhat did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and touch?
Sophie Waimon 10/05/2018 6:24 PMSpending time outside is such a relaxing and peaceful was to distress after school. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Sophie Waimon 10/04/2018 8:43 AMEnergy is generated in coal burning power plants. I found it is not really necessary to leave the lights on I. Your house especially during the day when there is enough natural sunlight to light the rooms. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How can we start shifting from a meat-focused food culture to a more plant-based one?
Sophie Waimon 10/04/2018 8:41 AMI think I plant based diet is great because it is more easily renewable. Also it has made me feel healthier by eating more fruit everyday. While meat is important for protein it is not anecesity as you can get plant based protein as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Sophie Waimon 10/04/2018 8:39 AMWe can make an effort to use reusable water bottles in stead of plastic ones. If you can get use out of one water bottle for years instead of minutes we will waste a lot less plastic and water too.-
Valerie Sorenson 10/19/2018 3:46 PMLas fuentes de agua que tenemos en los edificios académicos lo hacen aun más fácil porque hay manera fácil de rellenar las botellas.
