Last day of the challenge! Keep up the good habits, shed the bad ones...

    Transportation Choose a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

Luckily, many meetings that once had to take place face-to-face can now be made over the internet with virtual meeting software.

    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

It's about managing your stuff. Getting rid of things that clutter and do not add value to your life. It's about maintaining those that do. You have to make difficult decisions (Will I need this in the future or can I get rid of it?) and may have to live with a little regret (I wish I had kept that!) but living simpler has so many benefits.

I think I need to set some more ambitious goals.

Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

One huge barrier to this is the overabundance of them. People are often willing if not eager to spend a little extra for convenience. Prior to the saturation of bottled water, people would have to bring their own bottle if they wanted to bring water with them somewhere, or get it at their destination. Now it's so easy to throw a little bottle in their bag then throw it away when they're done. There's a strong emphasis on drinking plenty of water and its an easy "healthy habit" that many can adopt. At the same time, retailers display huge packs of single-portion water bottles at very affordable prices and this habit is even more convenient. The increase in public fill-stations is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to discourage the single serve, single use bottles. I've set myself us for success by having plenty of bottles available to me and by establishing the habit of filling them before I leave the house. I teach my kids to do the same so that they don't develop the habit of using disposable water bottles.

    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

The hardest part about the own-cup thing is having to carry it around "in case" you might get coffee and then carrying the empty cup when you're done. An inconvenience at best, but still an obstacle. Having a good leak-proof lid is key as you don't want to have to worry about leaking over your other stuff in a bag.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

Most often, I'll skip the bag entirely. If for some reason I actually need a bag, I'll take one and reuse it later. I always keep bags in my car (with an "emergency" backup tiny one in the glove compartment, and I even keep a compact bag in my backpack at all times so I have no excuses.

    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

I was happy to see this and print-holds as the default settings. Easy impacts are the best!

Avoiding disposables takes bit bit of extra effort, but it's never asking too much for me to bring a reusable bag to the grocery store.

I forgot to sign in the last few days, but I found lots of ways to avoid single use items this weekend. Using my coffee thermos, for one!
