To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Five minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?

This was really difficult to remember every morning. Having a sand timer in the shower would be really helpful.

    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

After hearing about the plastic islands and straws stuck in turtle noses, I feel like my whole thinking about reducing plastic has completely shifted and I am much more committed. Now straws disgust me and any food container that is not compostable is a huge deterrent for me on whether or not I choose to eat at that establishment. I have started sewing reusable bags for produce, and bringing reusable containers and bags with me everywhere. Next step is to get really nice bamboo utensils to bring everywhere.

    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

Some websites make it very hard to find the option to go paperless which I think was most surprising to me. Wouldn't it be cheaper for them to go paperless anyway?? Next steps are to find out how to take myself off junk mail lists because they just pile up on my kitchen table.

Health Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Who is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?

Communities of colour are most affected, particularly African American and Native American communities. They are also a significant population within urban centers which I had never realised before.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

Bought a groupon to try kettlebells in a local studio down the street from my house!

Reducing my paper mail also makes me feel more secure about my identity protection - identity theft is huge right now and seemingly harder to avoid.  Less items with my name and address on it is great for the environment and myself!

Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I already try to limit single-use items but am curious about trying fabric napkins over paper napkins - something we already do at Waterleaf in the women's restroom and paper hand towels.

    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

I've taken a moment to relax and really focus on what I am eating - rather than rushing through my meal and onto the next task.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

Wear extra layers, make sure to adjust thermostat for hours not home, when cold get moving for a few moments to warm up- maybe between commercials while watching tv, etc.  In the summer use fans rather than AC, open up the windows during evenings and cooler mornings.

I think the point to meditation is to free your mind of everything in your life, so that when you return to reality refreshed and ready to get back into your life more level headed.
