Fair Trade

I worked for (and still do volunteer/advocate for) a Non-profit organization called Take Heart from 2013-2015. It is an organization that helps widows and aged-out orphans in Kenya, Africa. One of the biggest ways that we help these ladies is centered around sustainability. We give the widows a micro-loan to begin a business- most of them sell used clothes or make products from recycled material. We then bring the products that they make back to the states to sell. The money raised from selling the product, goes back into the organization by purchasing a cow, goat or tomato plants for these women so they can begin new business avenues by selling milk and tomatoes. Being involved with this organization and teaching these women to be self-sufficient has in-tern taught me to practice sustainability in my own life more frequently. I will wash dishes by hand for a month at a time to help with saving water. I will by used instead of new, donate used clothes to keep from them being trashed. I am working on trying to grow my own vegetables so I can become self sustained in that sense too. One great thing about Fair trade is the connection to the idea of sustainability.

I have found that by using a reusable water bottle, I am drinking more water during the day!

I am LOVING this FALL weather!!! It has definitely made it easier to spend the extra time outside!

I have found that only having three reusable water bottles has posed a problem from time to time, especially if I forget to wash one. If all 3 of my bottles are dirty, it has been a struggle to make sure I take the time to clean one for use rather than reaching for a non-reusable water bottle. The challenge is what makes the accomplishments more meaningful.

Over the weekend, I was able to keep on target with my actions and continue toward my goal.

With the news of Hurricane Michael heading toward the shoreline of a few states, I cant help but wonder about the impact. It makes me wonder about the steps a state could put in place to help eliminate some of the cleanup that will inevitably occur after a natural disaster. I am now just curious if there are any precautions that are taken to help with recycling and trash clean up.

Had a conversation with my husband this weekend about how we have too much excess in our home and are going to begin cleaning out and recycling more and more.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

In today's busy world, especially as a mom, I found it easier to grab 3-4 water bottles every morning while running out the door. Now I know that with a little prep, I can have a reusable cup already packed and make the walk to the water fountain. This not only allows myself to have a mental break from work, but to also exercise a healthy habit of walking. I think a key note for making this a permanent change is committing to not purchasing water bottles anymore.
