Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Avoid refined sugar
Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?

I don't feel addicted to sugar, but I eat it when it is around. In the office, that is frequently, so it can be tough to say no.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

What concerns me most about how people are affecting the planet is that we don't see a direct response from our actions to rising carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Similarly, the we don't travel with the waste that collects in the oceans, so it is too distant to understand.

Yes, I agree Lewis. We could lower our biggest impacting greenhouse gas - carbon dioxide (i.e., CO2) that is due to our transportation habits. So by driving less or driving an electric vehicle (EV) and getting the electricity from a renewable energy source like solar or wind power, we could potentially lower that raising CO2 in the atmosphere.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

It surprises me how many pounds of food people throw out. I'm fortunate enough to live close to a food coop and can walk over whenever I need to get ingredients. I don't have to stock up and get more than I need. I would rather use the money spent on spoiled food on my retirement.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
To what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?

I got through 9 products in about 20 minutes. I was able to find all of them (or at least their ingredients on EWG's website. I was surprised that Simple Green's Concentrated All Purpose Cleaner got an F because it has a "Non-Toxic & Biodegradable Formula." I have ammonia (F) that I never use and I don't know where to take it. The Landfill does have a household hazardous waste collection., though.  The stuff I got from the Co-op got A's and 1 or 2 C's.

    Transportation Choose a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

I take Amtrak on my trips and visit a few cities on the way. However, I flew to San Francisco since there is not a direct route their from Chicago.  I calculated the carbon emissions using a site I found in a web search and purchased an offset using Terrapass.

I've gone through most of the challenges and checked off things I've already done. It was a bit tricky, though, because there are things I usually do, but not always.  Some of those ended up on my to-do actions.
