S. Mark's actions
Health
Take Control
Both system and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Water
Fix Leaky Faucets
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water per faucet every day.
Water
Install Greywater Catchment
I will install a greywater catchment system in my home.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Energy
Replace Manual Thermostats
I will replace manual thermostats with programmable ones.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
S. Mark LaSalle 10/15/2018 10:04 AMFinally getting cold in Boise. The temp drop is requiring a reminder to put on a sweater and pile some more blankets on the beds. -
S. Mark LaSalle 10/12/2018 8:52 AMGetting a good rhythm going. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
S. Mark LaSalle 10/01/2018 10:48 AMI carry shopping bags around in my car. I re-purpose boxes for storage and art projects. We turn old clothing, if not donate-able, into rags or crafts. Super glue, some small screw drivers, and time will fix most things.-
Karen Aguilar 10/01/2018 10:56 AMI do most of my shopping at thrift stores. And I oftenly go through what I have and if I haven't used anything in over a year, I try to get rid of it by donation to one of the local thrift stores if still in good shape.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Switch to Cold WaterWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
S. Mark LaSalle 10/01/2018 10:43 AMWe are saving money in our budget to buy more energy efficient appliances (Washer and Dryer, Fridge, Freezer, Dishwasher). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Replace Manual ThermostatsHow do you anticipate replacing your thermostats for programmable ones will positively impact your life?
S. Mark LaSalle 10/01/2018 10:41 AMWe converted to programmable controls for HVAC years ago. Have setbacks available means that our home is not being heated for cooled when we were not home and thus wasting energy. It also is a time saver as we can set it and forget it. -
