Less Screen Time

I will replace 30 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.

COMPLETED 20

Nature

Support Local Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Support Native Communities

I will use the resource links provided and spend 60 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.

Use Reusable Bags

I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Support Native Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

Balance is important to sustainability because if you disrupt the balance, if you take more than you give, sustainability ceases to exist. Resources will run dry.

    Nature Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

If we don't take care of pollinators life essentially stops. They are the root of what drives further growth. Ive learned recently that many of the vegetables that we eat are being pollinated either artificially or by pollinators that are shipped in from other areas, which is still unnatural. So much so that many of those vegetables are not technically considered vegan anymore. We need to be more conscious of what we are planting in our yards to encourage their activity and keep them in the area but we also need to be more careful and knowledgeable about what we consume and the potential environmental costs.

Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

I'd really like to support our local farmers markets more often and make sure we are buying/eating seasonal foods. I want to be more conscious of my food miles as well as supporting local farmers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I used to use plastic bags at the grocery store but have now started using reusable bags. I also don't worry about bagging my vegetables.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

I found myself in this situation this weekend and opted for a paper bag instead of plastic. I know that we will reuse a paper bag at home and they are easier to recycle. I am doing better at making sure I have my reusable bags in my trunk at all times and am bringing them into the store with me.

    Simplicity Less Screen Time
What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

It wasnt really an issue of difficulty choosing a different activity, but more about breaking the habit of immediately picking up my phone or turning on the tv. As soon as I thought about doing something else, it was easy to turn off the screen.
